The Kenmore 20022 is a no-frills washer that has better energy efficiency than similar top-load models built prior to 2004, but nowhere near the water and utility savings of modern-style high-efficiency machines. To save energy, in most cycles the 20022 uses a spray rinse rather than immersing the clothes in water, and the wash cycles last longer than on older machines. The 20022 has an automatic bleach dispenser, but not a fabric softener dispenser. Although Kenmore claims the 20022 can wash 22 XL T-shirts in a single load, its capacity is only average compared to the extra-large machines currently on the market. Its maximum spin speed of 700 rpm will extract a fair amount of water from the clothes, but not nearly as much as high-efficiency models with speeds of 1,000-1,400 rpm. All Kenmore appliances are sold only at Sears, Kmart of Kenmore.com; in October 2012, this model was not available through Kmart.

What People Are Saying:

The Kenmore 20022 washer is a top seller at Sears, but user reviews on that site are mixed. In almost 160 reviews, 58 users give it the lowest possible score and 47 give it the highest possible score, with a fairly even scattering of in-between ratings; overall, less than half recommend this model. Those who like this machine call it a basic, relatively roomy washer that spins a fair amount of moisture out of the clothes before they go into the dryer. Those who dislike the 20022 complain about the federally-mandated locking lid and say the machine is loud, takes a long time to fill with water, can take hours to complete a wash cycle and sometimes won't finish the cycle; many who don't recommend this unit report repeated repair problems, especially after the one-year warranty expires.
