The Kenmore 21102 is a basic mid-size machine with a conventional top-load center-agitator design, and it should handle the laundry needs of a small household, or one that doesn't do extra-large loads or frequent washes. It has six wash cycles -- normal, heavy duty, casual, delicates, rinse & drain and rinse & spin, with a choice of regular and super settings for the normal or heavy duty cycles. Digital dials let the user select load size (extra small, small, medium, large, extra large), wash temperature (cold, cool, warm, hot) and type of rinse (one rinse, 2nd rinse, one rinse with fabric softener, 2nd rinse with fabric softener). With a maximum spin speed of 700 rpm it should extract a reasonable amount of water from clothes before the cycle ends, but not as much as more expensive high-efficiency models with spin speeds of 1,000-1,400 rpm.

What People Are Saying:

Consumer Reports rates the Kenmore 21102 as excellent for vibration, very good for water efficiency, capacity and gentleness, and only good (a somewhat mediocre ranking) for washing performance, energy efficiency and noise, giving it an overall performance rating of good, which is roughly equivalent to a C letter grade. User reviews are more negative than positive; out of more than 110 reviews at Sears, only 40% recommend this machine. Those who dislike this machine say it is noisy, doesn't clean well, unbalances the load easily and that the wash cycles take too long; many complain about the federally-mandated automatic lid-lock that requires pushing a pause button to open the lid after a wash cycle has started; and several report repeated repairs, particularly after the one-year warranty expires. Those who like this machine say it is quiet compared to older machines and is a work horse that cleans well as long as users follow the instruction manual.
