Keep it Simple

Sometimes the best buy is a basic machine without potentially repair-prone bells and whistles. Don't pay for features or capacity that won't be used. Make a realistic list of the household's typical laundry loads, and shop for the features that work best with those items or materials.

Move Beyond Matching

Any washer will work with any dryer, so unless the washer and dryer are on display in a public area or will be stacked on top of each other, it isn't necessary to buy matching units. As the price of the washer increases, so does the cost of the matching dryer, even though the dryer may not have (or need) as many extra features as the washer. Get all the features needed in the washer, then save money by buying a more basic dryer with just the features that will actually be used.

Adding Color Adds Cost

Washers and dryers are available in cool designer colors like cranberry red or graphite steel (for a stainless look), but these typically cost about $100 more than the same machine in white.

Look at Floor Models

A machine that's been on display or that has a small side dent that won't be visible after the unit is installed may be discounted 10%-50%. These machines often function perfectly and may still be under warranty.
